Don't Hate Her Because She's "Beautiful"

The Daily Mail, one of the UK’s big papers (and surprisingly to me, NOT a News Corp. paper), has a columnist named Samantha Brick. A couple of weeks ago (April 5 or 5 April), Ms. Brick wrote an article about how women hate her because she’s “so beautiful.”  Cue worldwide firestorm. Here’s Samantha Brick, herself:

And here’s Kelly LeBrock from the Pantene “Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful” ads:

(Okay, well, technically, it’s from “Weird Science”, but the movie and the ads were contemporaneous).

Since then, we have moved on to more important stuff like transgender beauty queens, penguins biting Newt Gingrich (yea, penguin!) and Kim Whoredashian hooking up with Kanye (Ego Bigger Than Donald Trump’s) West while wanting to run for mayor of Glendale (there really isn’t one) because “there’s a lot of Armenians there.” This new ambition supports the theory of politicians being whores.

Speaking of which…

The Brickhead has opened her mouth again about how her “fabulous self-esteem” came from being Daddy’s “Number 1 Girl.” Now, she says she “thinks” he did this because she is his oldest daughter, but I will bet you a pony that either a) Daddy told this to all of his daughters or b) her four sisters are plotting to shave her head at the first opportunity. This kind of naked parental favoritism doesn’t make for healthy adults. According to her column, as she grew up, her father constantly told her she was beautiful and the most important thing in his life. The fact that she had a lazy eye surgically fixed at the age of 8 because Daddy “didn’t want her to get picked on” kind of undercuts that. Ms. Brick has 4 sisters and although she bitches about women “hating her for being beautiful” (really), she talks about rivalries among the five because “we each want to be the prettiest, the most intelligent, the funniest.” (Honey, you’re down two strikes and I’d have to see pictures of your sisters before calling you out. It’s only fair). Daddy used to tell her that all women were mean to each other. And since that's the energy she puts out...

She's now married to her second husband (according to her, the first one was a Peter Pan. I don’t think she traded up), a Frenchman named Pascal. Here is what she says about Pascal:  “strong masculine partner who would walk over hot coals to ensure no harm comes to me.” Unh huh.
Oh, we’re just gettin’ warmed up (to paraphrase Al Pacino from “Scent of a Woman”).

Let us set out here with the presumption that Ms. Brick believes herself to be a happy, well-adjusted woman with good self-esteem (not vanity) and a healthy self-regard. Everyone in the world is envious of her. This is the image she projects.  We are back to “My Cousin Vinny” and the scene with the playing cards and the brick (Yeah, I know. It just worked out that way).

“The D.A.'s got to build a case. Building a case is like building a house. Each piece of evidence is just another building block. He wants to make a brick bunker of a building. He wants to use serious, solid-looking bricks, like, like these, right?”

He pulls out the Ace of Spades.

“He's going to show you the bricks. He'll show you they got straight sides. He'll show you how they got the right shape. He'll show them to you in a very special way, so that they appear to have everything a brick should have. But there's one thing he's not gonna show you..”
He turns the card on its side.

“When you look at the bricks from the right angle, they're as thin as this playing card.” And the Ace of Spades is suddenly the Joker.

One of her columns describes her “lifelong obsession with her weight.” (Column dated April 19,2011) She refused offered dance classes because “Who wanted to see my hefty form attempt to pirouette across a mirrored room?” Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1377884/Ill-fat-girl-Samantha-Brick-obsessed-weight--chubby-child.html#ixzz1sYJAgOMA . There is at least one fat acceptance advocate who could tear this twit a new one. Samantha has a poor opinion of anyone  who is overweight. Here’s your first clue that perhaps the  emotional brick is not as solid as you may think.

Ms. Brick is certainly thin. Her husband, Pascal, sees to it by threatening to divorce her if she puts on weight.  He gave her an exercise bike for Christmas a couple of years ago and CHECKS THE MILEAGE to make sure she rides it and rides it enough to suit him. (Jesus Howard Christ)

I can think of at least 10 women who would have tied Pascal’s tongue around the spokes the first time he pulled that stunt.

He also checks the groceries to make sure Samantha’s not bringing home any foods he doesn’t think she should be eating. She goes along with it because “it’s not worth the argument.” She also cops to "sneaking" chocolate. She tells a story of bringing home a family-sized chocolate bar (doesn't give a specific weight or dimensions) and catching hell from him. What he DIDN'T know is that she had purchased two bars. The second one didn't make it home. If she's so happy with him monitoring her weight, why does she feel the need to sneak? Wouldn't she just happily fall in with his wishes?

Samantha is a British subject, they live in La Belle France, but they don’t go visit her family in England so much anymore because Pascal thinks it’s acceptable to loudly criticize the appearance of strangers who are too fat for his liking. Obviously, this does not apply to French douchebags. I don't want to see this guy in the national uniform of Speedo.

Pascal also picks out Samantha’s clothing for her, even once (and I am NOT making this up) “refused to open the car door unless I changed into something he approved of.”

What the…? Either you open the car door yourself or you open the front door to your house and stay there. Let me teach you a handy French phrase: Allez vous faire foutre.  (Go fuck yourself)

By the way, this is Pascal:

Monsieur Merde appears to enjoy his brie et vin. Either that or he’s due in about 3 months.
This is not a marriage. It’s a hostage situation. This woman has full-blown Stockholm Syndrome.

But wait, there’s more…

Ms. Brick left a position as a TV producer (most famously, a series based at a British fat camp called “Chubby Children.”) to devote herself to being Pascal’s victim wife. I can’t find information on IMDB about Samantha Brick, except for a PA on something from 2009 called “Sensored.” Just saying.

Let’s reiterate: Ms. Brick is taking a victim mindset. She states that her life is difficult because women resent her for being beautiful (she said a pilot on a flight had sent a bottle of champagne back to her seat. I’d like to meet this pilot and administer both a breathalyzer and an eye test). And when that column created an international shit storm, she whined about being the target of a global witch hunt.

In “Addams Family Values”, during a Summer Camp From Hell swimming lesson, Wednesday Addams is supposed to save a drowning victim. The alpha mean girl steps forward and says, “I’ll be the victim.” Wednesday retorts, “All your life.”

Ms. Brick, in a July 29, 2010 column, stated that “the TV industry is a world that ruthlessly allows women to be exploited.” She describes some encounter that, had they happened stateside, would have resulted in HUGE settlements in sexual harassment lawsuits. Victim of her own beauty, right?
Okay, let’s jump forward to her August 25, 2011 column about using her looks to advance her career and that “any woman with sense” does it.  “I learned very early on in my career how to clock within seconds who the important male was in any room and pandered to him accordingly.

And you wonder why they behaved like sexist pigs?  Really? If I hold a candle next to your right ear and blow in your left ear, will the flame flicker? Honey, if you're going to treat them like sexist pigs, how the hell do you EXPECT them to behave?

I have worked with women like this. And yes, I resented them because the work that wasn't getting done by them because they were too busy trying to play the men in the room got dumped on the rest of us. Those women, too, had the "all the other girls hate me because I'm beautiful" whine going. One was particularly ridiculous: she'd buy her clothes a size too small because she didn't want to admit to a double-digit dress size. It was funny as hell to watch her try to walk. It wasn't so funny having to clean up after the messes her incompetence caused.

Normally, I’m not going to dig into someone else’s looks, but as we say in the legal business, “the defendant opened the door.” Others have commented about her “meaty calves” and “matronly dresses” but I would ding her for the bulbous nose and uneven teeth (Daddy should have sprung for braces at the same time as the lazy eye operation).

I’m calling bullshit on the healthy self-regard and seeing a “twinkly-eyed temptress” (Ew.  Really? This is your self-description? Straight out of Harlequin Romances) when she looks in the mirror.  Look at the picture , again. Maybe there’s Botox involved, but that smile doesn’t reach the eyes. You know those hellish Christmas cards? The ones with the whole family in reindeer sweaters where you look at the kids and you know they just caught hell and are smiling in a “Look, I’m being good, honest, really” way? Smile on demand but not feeling it. It’s just plastered on to please someone and avoid…abuse.

And if your self-image is that of "temptress," are you really surprised that your friends think you're after their husbands? And that they don't like it? THAT'S WHAT THE FUCKING TEMPTATION IS, YOU SELF-ABSORBED DOPE!

I don’t hate this woman. From what I’m seeing, she’s living in a hell of her own making. When you are a victim, you have no power and she’s clearly ceded all of hers to the men in her life while deluding herself that coquetting and “frisking like a prostitute with a prospective client” (Rhett Butler, “Gone With the Wind.” I know that book by heart, practically) actually shifts power to her. If she really had the power, we wouldn’t hear about “sexist pigs”, nor would we hear whining about how everybody hates her because she’s beautiful.  Nor would she tolerate the control freak. He may not be hitting her (yet), but what happens if she tries to assert herself (that’s the true demonstration of power)? Not so much a twinkly-eyed temptress (ugh) as a doormat telling itself it’s a lioness. If you’re going to shake your ass to get ahead, Honey, you’d better be prepared to accept what’s coming.
My late father taught me to believe that since I had a brain, I should be relying on that to get me through life. My mother never told me to use my looks to get ahead (although it did drive her buggy if I left the house without mascara or lipstick or dressed in torn or too-casual clothing). I think I am a woman of sense. And while my male co-workers aren’t chatting me up, they do respect me.

“…you might be thinking I’m little better than a prostitute.” No, Samantha, you are NO better. And you’re a pretty sad one at that.

Phenomenal Woman

176.4 lbs. Lowest it’s been in 20 years.

WOOO FRIGGIN’ HOOOOO!

Okay, yeah, so I’m back on HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadatropin. In fact, I found it in Chocolate Mint, I kid you not), but it’s working.

I took a good look at myself in the mirror (and there will be photos later. As I write this, my nose is peeling like I’ve had a sunburn – which I haven’t , I’m in my glasses (which are VERY thick), big floppy long-sleeved Buddha t shirt, sweat pants, fluffy socks and no makeup. No picture right now. Part of the HCG drill is no personal hygiene products with oils or creams and that extends to makeup unless it’s the mineral variety, which I don’t own. Well, not the stuff to put color in my cheeks and on my lashes. Seriously, I’m pale. Not Edgar Winter albino, but close) and stopped to look again.

I watch the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show every year (GO, MINATURE SCHNAUZERS!!!! WIN IT IN MEMORY OF LILY MARLENE III  AND GREEN MOUNTAIN MAXIMILLIAN AKA MIGHTY MAX THE WONDER DOPE!!!!) and there is a saying: “A good groomer can carve a dog out of a pile of hair.” 9 months of cleaning up my diet (except for a couple of rages, but I may have a solution to that problem), 7 months of faithfully exercising and I realized that I have been carving a woman out of fat.

I see the beginnings of a waist. Not the barrel shape between shoulders and hips that was there, not a straight line from shoulders to hips, but the beginnings of an indentation under the bra line. That hasn’t been there since the 20th century.

I raised my arms and shook them. The upper arm jiggle is noticeably smaller. Huh. Dr. Best got the knots out of my back and shoulders and they are now responding to weight training. And I have collarbones. And a jaw. Not just the shadow of a jawline, I have an actual jawline and my neck looks longer without all the fat hanging around it.

Could it be…

Emboldened, I stood sideways and sucked in my gut. Doing this, it is nearly exactly where I want it to be. I can see where the bottom of my rib cage is (and feel it without pushing in too hard).

This is payoff. This is motivation. This is incentive. I finally feel like I look feminine. I look like the woman that I am (ironic as I am enjoying the beginnings of menopause aka the Hot Flashdance. I don’t need leg warmers, but the torn sweatshirt would be helpful when the internal furnace kicks on) and not some asexual blob with boobs. I’m a phenomenal woman, phenomenally.

I’ve been wearing my size 13 Calvin Klein jeans COMFORTABLY for days. I can pull the size 12 ones up on my ass. I can’t zip them closed, but we’re getting there (they’re boot cut and I really don’t care for boot cut mostly because the makers figure that all plus sizes have fat legs and therefore need boot cut jeans. I’ve been wearing boot cut forever).

If you saw me today, you saw me swinging my hips as I walked. Why? Because I am a woman, goddammit, and that’s just what we do.

I didn’t come to this realization in enough time to pull together a sexy costume for Halloween, but, wow, I can wear a sexy costume for Halloween and not feel ridiculous on some level (I wore sexy in 2003 and was told by someone I no longer trust that I shouldn’t; I was too fat and it was a joke and ridiculous and people were laughing behind my back. Fuck him). But, I can anticipate the next costume party and be sexy-eligible (film themed sexy. I have some time to figure it out).

I left the gym (weight training and elliptical) feeling powerful. Feeling feminine and powerful. This is self-confidence and not just the façade. Attractive guys in my age range (whom I’ve heard gigglingly dismissed as “Silverbacks” by girls who forget they will one day be the same age) are smiling in my direction, giving me a nod. Maybe. Phenomenal woman, phenomenally.

I leave you with Maya Angelou’s poem as this has been running through my head all afternoon.

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Garfield on Fitness

186 lbs. You know, I’ve lived in this weight neighborhood long enough.

There is an old (like, 1970s) Garfield poster where he’s sitting there in all his stripey body-by-lasagne wearing a pair of sneakers and saying, “I’m already in a bad mood. I might as well exercise.”

Welcome to today’s frame of mind. If this was “Office Space,” some annoying, chirpy, chubby broad would pull a cutesy face and announce, “Uh oh, looks like someone has a bad case of the Mondays.” And we would find out if it’s possible to give an atomic wedgie with pantyhose (I’m thinking you really have to focus the motion of the upward yank).

I’m in a rut. I don’t like ruts. I grew up in Rutland, Vermont and could not wait to get the hell out of there; the name was suitable. Still is, apparently.

Okay, to be honest, I’m better off than I was 3 months ago: I’m working and earning money (Hey, it is possible to work and not get paid. Ask a stay at home parent). I have medical insurance again and Dr. Best is doing great things with the right knee (still no Rotating Staircase of Death, but it can handle an easy hour on the elliptical. Emphasis on the “easy” part).

What’s bugging me is that I’ve been bouncing around the same weight for nearly 2 months. When God decided to wipe out the Earth with the Great Flood, it didn’t take Him this long to get the job done. Christ spent 40 days in the desert before beginning His ministry (what is it with the Bible and the obsession with the number 40? 40 days and 40 nights of rain? 40 days fasting in the desert? Wandering in the desert for 40 years? Should this be a given as a lottery number?). Again, it’s taking me longer to get back on the weight loss track. To think that the Almighty took His time and got bigger things done sooner is not a comforting thought. My weight to lose is of Biblical proportions? Yikes.

The self-discipline that has kept me out of the sugar and starch has faltered, much in the same way the Red Sox have faltered lately, although I don’t believe the two situations are linked (There is the legend of the Fisher King out of the Arthurian legends: as the king fell ill and suffered, so did his lands. You see this in the 1982 flick “Excalibur.” You also get to see Helen Mirren buck naked and a knight getting his freak on in full armor. Some mental images etch pretty deeply on one view). I do not think my health and that of Boston’s playoff hopes have some metaphysical link; as my pounds whittle down, so does the magic number. Yeah, no. One has nothing to do with the other.

I got a free issue of “Self” magazine and it was pretty much cover to cover how and why you should lose weight NOW. “The #1 Way to Erase 8 Pounds”, it screams next to Jennifer Hudson’s head (Since this IS a “women’s” magazine cover, the correct answer is “airbrushing.”). Butt blasting exercises, cute workout clothes, EAT EGG WHITES (that ain’t happening in this house).

My life must suck. Actually, today’s frame of mind, it kind of does, but not because I don’t have cute workout clothes.

As soon as I finished my workload today (and, thank you, Mortgage Gods, for giving me relatively easy loans today). I grabbed myself by the scruff of the neck and hauled off to the gym.

And burned 1200 calories. Yeah. An hour of weight training and an hour on the elliptical adds up.

There was a mild endorphin rush afterwards that lifted my mood somewhat. The Sox just beat the crap out of the Orioles within the past hour (after I had done my workout. Again, not necessarily linked, but…) and that lifted my mood a bit. So, we’ll see what the scale says in the morning.

Step Right Up, Watch the Fat Lady Dive Into the Piranha Pool

193.4 lbs. I believe the scale is just toying with me. It knows that only 2 lbs. stand between me and leaving obesity in the rear view mirror. Scales are evil. You heard it here first.

I had a “hubba hubba” moment at the gym. The guy on the machine next to me looked like Antonio Banderas. We exchanged a smile, but since Melanie Griffith didn’t materialize to hang on him, I’m thinking it wasn’t Antonio.

After the encounter with the enthusiastic spinning teacher yesterday (and I say that with a smile. He seemed like a decent guy), I got to thinking about…men. There’s a heavily loaded minefield for you.

I have dated. While not exactly a Parade of Horribles, there was only one guy who wanted to go out more than once and that was because he was trying to convince me to blow him in a public place. I never heard from him after I made it clear that it wasn’t going to happen. There were the men looking to cheat on their wives. I firmly believe that what goes around comes around and if your significant other cheated on someone else with you, he will eventually cheat on you, too.

In graduate school, one friend (on my behalf and with my permission) asked another classmate if he’d be interested in dating a “woman of size” (I was told my name was left out of it). This guy was also big. His reply (and this is verbatim): “One of us in this relationship needs to be thin.”

I swear on a stack of Red Sox autographs this high (including a picture signed by both Fred Lynn and Jim Rice) that I speak the truth.

There was a guy at a previous place of employment. We were on great terms, a lot of similar interests and both single. I took the plunge, asked him if he’d like to go out some time and he shot me down cold. I have no idea why, but when I saw him later and he made a point of telling me about a trip to Hawaii he’d just taken with his girlfriend (whom he wasn’t dating when we worked together). I don’t know if it was the weight or something else, but I’d put my money on the double chins.

Self-image: My belief was that RuPaul made a more attractive woman than I do.

As mentioned, when people seek to really wound me, the insults start with “fat…” and build from there. And those come thick and fast, like the oysters in “The Walrus and the Carpenter.” This tells me of the depth and breadth of prejudice against me. Not me as who I am, but my appearance. It does tend to make one cautious.

I have formed close, solid friendships with men I have worked with, gone to school with, but it never went any further. They all had active relationships, but our connection never went any further than really good friend. It should be noted in the interests of accuracy that they are (or were. At least one past tense here) married. I get along with the wives, too.

There is one man I had a crush on in graduate school. He’s currently unattached and I had occasion to run into him last year. Not a date. He talked what he wanted in a woman: it turned out to be a combination of Marie Curie, Martha Stewart and Gisele Bundchen. I’ve got the brains (well, not as far as physics are concerned) and the housekeeping/cooking skills, but I ain’t got the lingerie model body.

I had a guy who was in his fifties, going bald but with a ponytail halfway down his back, bulbous eyes, a paunch that looked like he was carrying triplets, more body hair than an orangutan, not much of a job and living with his mother (really) tell me that my desire for an attractive, educated and well-employed was never going to happen because “you always want what you can’t have.” He was dating a slender blonde in her forties and constantly hitting on girls in their twenties. I was younger than his girlfriend, but a complete non-entity in his eyes. Not that I wanted to be hit on by him, but the fact that someone pretty much at the bottom end of the dating pool rejected me out of hand pretty much confirmed that I was better off on my own and that was going to be my lot in life.  I never really surrendered to it, though.

So, I’ve sat out a bunch of Valentine’s Days and New Year’s Eves. In order to deal with bitchy co-workers, I have sent flowers to myself a couple of times (I have great taste and know exactly what I like. And it did silence the bitchy co-workers).

I am doing this body improvement for me. While I appreciate the expressions of support, I am doing this to be at home in my own skin (please God, let the lysine and garlic do their collagen building thing and not leave me with excess skin). If I am at ease and can take pleasure in my own company, chances are, somebody else will, too. I hope that person has 1) brains, 2) heart, 3) sense of humor, 4) a good job and 5) a penis.
